If you feel you have done everything to optimize your site for the major search engines (known as search engine optimization or SEO) and after 18-24 months it is still not making any real money, then by all means dump it. Certainly do not wait any longer than 24 months.

Giving up too soon

In my experience, too many people give up too soon. It is well known that some 90% of all online internet marketing/sales (monetized) sites do not make it and are gone within a few months, and I believe that a significant number of these gave up too soon.

It may be that their SEO optimization was not too good, particularly a failure to use great keywords and a failure to get their name and their website’s address out there in cyberland. There is no easier way of achieving that than by writing articles and submitting them to a few good online article directories, such as this one.

For the vast majority of us, it takes anything from six months to two years to really get a regular revenue stream going. I know from personal experience that this can be very frustrating. You log-in to your statistics and analysis counter daily, only to find a paltry few visitors in the last 24 hours, and you already know that it will be the same ‘0′ dollars on the Clickbank or other service you use.

Patience really is the watch-word

Until a few months ago I too was thinking of dumping one of my sites, but, I re-checked that I had really done all I could to thoroughly SEO the site, and all it actually took was the tweaking of a few keywords, and suddenly I was getting onto page one of Google, and have now had several of my site’s pages at the top of the first page! That has, of course, begun to translate into reasonable traffic numbers, but I still need more before I can call the site a real success. The site has only been up and running for four months, so I have a while to wait before the bigger bucks should start rolling in. I need to invoke the trait my wife has in spades. Patience!

Back to Blogs…

I think we should also remember that blogs also need good optimization, good keywords and so on, and while they obviously have major advantages, they also have their quite distinct drawbacks. The major drawback is that many do not take a blog as seriously as they would its website equivalent. In the mind of many, a blog is still associated with online diaries and random musings. That last word, musings, is one of the most popular names for all blogs. That is a bit of a millstone around the neck of a serious blogger, whose aim is the generation of serious money!

Additionally, sites such as Blog Catalog and of course the social networking sites like Facebook and My Space, have many youngsters not at all interested in business, and always asking you to “be their friend”. I am on these sites for the value they bring in business networking, I am not there to “make friends” – I have plenty of very good friends in the real world.

These sites should give you an option when you first register of opting out of the “be my friend” but opting in to the “be my business contact”. Of course, after some time, the business contact may also become a friend, but the reverse is less likely.
